Our parish conference of St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) helps many families throughout the year, but since the start of the pandemic, calls for their assistance have increased greatly. They now average about 2 home visits a week. The help they provide includes free furniture, vouchers for clothing from the SVdP Dig and Save outlet, or food from the St. Vincent de Paul Pantry. The conference has also made payments to landlords for families behind on rent or to utility companies when families face shutoff. Beyond that, the conference has helped with childcare expenses, car repairs, security deposits, gas cards, or bus passes, and they also connect us with families that may need a Christmas Food Basket.
We usually support the work of our SVdP conference from the offerings at our Thanksgiving Mass and buy grocery gift cards to go in the Christmas Baskets with the proceeds of our holiday bake sale, but this year the pandemic means we have to do something different.
In response, St. Thomas Aquinas is participating in Giving Tuesday on December 1, with the theme “Helping Those Who Help Others.” Proceeds will help purchase gift cards for the Christmas Baskets and support the work of our St. Vincent de Paul Conference. Gifts will be matched one-for-one up to a maximum of $21,500.
There are two ways to make Giving Tuesday donations:
1. By check payable to St. Thomas Aquinas Parish. In the memo line write “Giving Tuesday.”
2. On our website on Tuesday December 1:
Go to stamadison.org. and click on the Donate tab to the far right side of the page.
On the next page, click the Donate button.
On the next page enter the amount of your donation. Do NOT check the box to make a monthly donation. Then click Write a note and write “Giving Tuesday.”
Select how you want to donate: PayPal or Debit or Credit card . This takes you to a page where you can log into your PayPal account or enter your credit/debit card information. Follow the directions there to complete your donation.
